The best organic mattress 2025: Toxin-free mattresses for cleaner sleep
These are the 5 best organic mattresses we've slept on that use natural, non-toxic materials for healthy sleep

We’ve compiled this list of the six best organic mattresses of 2025 after testing and sleeping on beds that incorporate natural materials, like GOLS-Certified latex and GOTS-Certified wool and cotton. Analyzing their performance using our mattress methodology, we’ve agreed on the best organic mattresses of the year that are eco-friendly, non-toxic and excel across areas like pressure relief, support, temperature regulation and more.
Each mattress is suited to a different sleep need, whether you’re a side sleeper or someone looking for luxury. But the Avocado Green, the best organic mattress overall and top pick in this year’s best mattress for all sleepers guide, will suit just about anyone thanks to its excellent zoned support and medium-firm feel. With tariffs looming, organic beds that use American-grown materials like wool and cotton are unlikely to up their prices, making them a great choice to invest in. And, despite their more premium price point because of the high-quality craftsmanship, regular mattress deals offer discounts throughout the year.
We recently made a significant update in June to this guide to include the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Organic Latex mattress as our 'best luxury' option after sleeping on it for three weeks. We replaced the Essentia Stratami with the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss because we thought the price point and luxury feel were more suitable for our readers.

The Avocado mattress tops this guide because it's not only an incredibly high-quality, durable bed for the price, but it is also the most suitable for all types of sleeper. Meaning no matter if you're a side sleeper, front or back sleeper, you're likely to find a version of this customizable, organic bed both comfortable and supportive.
The 100% certified organic Avocado Green Mattress is solidly made. It contains a 2-inch Dunlop latex comfort layer that lies over the top of a zone support core. This delivers different levels of support to different parts of your body, so you won’t feel the same level of firmness across the entire mattress – it will be firmer or softer in specific areas. It’s the coils that give it a firmer feel, which also makes it one of the best mattresses for heavier bodies. (The mattress can support up to 700lbs. of combined weight.)
We tested the Avocado Green Mattress and can recommend it to anyone who is prone to sleeping hot. That’s because its breathable GOTS certified organic cotton cover is naturally able to wick away sweat, so you’ll feel cooler and drier, even during the warmer months. (It's also cool to the touch.) The 100% natural latex is cooling too and is combined with tall pocketed coils for a slightly bouncy yet firm feel. For as much bounce as it has, we found this sustainable mattress's motion isolation impressive so couples will fare well with this one. Edge support is also excellent.
If you're a back or stomach sleeper, the medium-firm feel of the Avocado Green, combined with its ergonomic zones, will be a blessing. If you're not used to a firm mattress, allow yourself some time to break it in. However, if you're a side sleeper, you're unlikely to get as much pressure relief along the shoulders and hips as you'd like, even after a week or two of sleeping on it. (Alternatively, you can add a pillowtop for a plusher feel for another $400.)
You’ll get a one-year trial, which is market-leading, and it comes with a 25-year warranty. For the latest savings, see our guide to the best Avocado mattress sales and deals as well as our Avocado Mattress promo codes. Discounts range from 10% off to $200 off after coupon – but note that like most brands in the industry, Avocado has raised the retail prices of its beds in response to the current cost of living crisis. Also, beware that unlike most mattresses on this list, delivery is not free – it costs between $99 and $249.

While prices may look similar between Nolah and Avocado, Nolah offers more generous discounts throughout the year, meaning you're likely to get a lower price. While you'll still get a fantastic quality, organic mattress, you'll be sacrificing the ability to customize the feel of your bed (with only a medium-firm feel) and the 1-year sleep trial (with Nolah offering 120 nights instead) for the lower price.
Nolah Sleep makes a wide range of highly rated boxed mattresses, and the Nolah Natural 11 is the brand’s most eco-friendly mattress. A US-made hybrid made from organic Dunlop latex and recycled steel coils, the Natural 11 lives up to its title as the brand's "most responsive mattress yet". Its ease of movement makes it a great choice for restless and combination sleepers who change sleep positions throughout the night. It's also packed with eco-credentials and certified-organic materials, including GOTS-certified wool, GOLS-certified latex, and a GREENGUARD Gold stamp of approval.
We slept on the Nolah Natural for a month and found it to be ultra-responsive, making it a great choice for those who prefer a springy mattress and dislike the sink-in feel of memory foam. While the mattress does have some flexibility and give to prevent it from becoming too firm, we found its lack of pressure relief means it won't be the best choice for side sleepers who like a plush, cushioning surface.
However, we were impressed by how cool the Nolah Natural slept thanks to its naturally breathable materials, such as temperature-regulating wool, a moisture-wicking cotton cover, and airflow-boosting coils. The mattress also features a premium design, including a bottom cover with handles for easy moving.
You’ll have 120 nights to trial it at home (you have to trial it for a minimum of 30 nights), and the mattress comes with a market-leading Lifetime Warranty. If you change your mind during the trial period, Nolah will issue a refund but you will have to pay a $99 fee to cover collection and removal of the mattress. The award-winning Nolah Natural 11 is normally on sale for hundreds of dollars off and we have rounded up the best Nolah mattress sales and deals to save you money.

Best luxury organic mattress

Reasons to avoid
The reason this mattress earns its spot as best luxury is because of its impressive support that eases aches and pains, while still delivering the ultimate luxurious, cushioning feel. Latex has a naturally firm, buoyant feel, which, despite being a luxury material, doesn’t always feel that indulgent.
To combat this, the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss combines layers of latex with GOTS-Certified organic wool to provide extra pressure relief and cushioning. In fact, our tester for the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress review said that “the phenomenal pressure relief… cannot be overstated.”
This makes it a great mattress for back pain, too. Our reviewer, despite experiencing lower back pain and sore joints, said after just one night sleeping on the PlushBeds, she felt “renewed”. We attribute this to the three layers of durable latex which keep the hips lifted and the spine aligned — it’s also been highly recommended by chiropractors and orthopedic specialists.
In terms of breathability, the combination of the GOTS-Certified organic cotton cover with the wool layers create a moisture wicking, breathable top half of the mattress. Pair this with naturally breathable latex and it’s no surprise that we scored it 4.5 out of 5 for temperature control. Our tester slept with her “pajamas on and under a thick comforter” during a Texan summer and never broke a sweat. This makes it a good cooling alternative to the Birch Natural (#4) if you’re looking for a little more luxury.
The Botanical Bliss felt slightly weak around the edges, and the weight we placed on the edge to test it actually rolled off. Our tester also said that when she sat on the front edge of the bed, it “nearly dipped to the bed frame.” That being said, she still slept comfortably up to the edge of the mattress, so the perimeter isn’t necessarily unsupportive. If you rely on strong edges to get into and out of your bed, we’d suggest opting for the Naturepedic Concerto (#5) instead. You’ll get a similar luxury feel, but the edges are better reinforced, thanks to the innerspring coils.
What sets this mattress apart is the ability to customize it. With three different heights (9, 10 and 12”), two firmness options (medium and medium-firm) and the ability to unzip the mattress and remove layers of latex for your own comfort, it’s likely to suit the majority of sleepers. Be warned though, this mattress is cumbersome. While it has handles, the latex layers are incredibly heavy. We’d suggest you opt for the in-home set-up delivery if you live alone or need extra support (despite costing another $299).
While the lifetime warranty is a nice perk for a luxury purchase, we were slightly disappointed with the 100-night trial. If you want longer to try out your mattress to see if it’s right for you, opt for the Avocado Green mattress (#1) and have a full year to sleep on it before committing. As expected, the price point is premium. However, the majority of the time you can get up to 50% off in the PlushBeds mattress sales, and we usually see a queen size sell for $1,849 (MSRP $3,349). When compared to its competitors, like the Essentia Stratami queen we reviewed at $4,235, we actually think that’s pretty good value, considering how high-quality this bed is.
Best cooling organic mattress

This Birch mattress is made from 6 layers of high-quality, sustainable and organic materials. It starts with an organic cotton cover that is breathable and soft to keep sleepers comfortable. Beneath this are two wool layers, which serves as an organic, non-toxic fire retardant to fiberglass. It also has moisture wicking benefits, as well as pressure relief, meaning sleepers will find it easier to regulate their temperature. Like many of our top picks in this guide, there is a natural latex layer to provide that unique responsive and adaptive support, before individually wrapped coils that absorb motion, provide edge support and proper spine alignment.
Because of this structure, you can expect a bouncy feel. You won’t sink into this mattress like a memory foam mattress, instead you’ll feel lifted up. However, there is still some ‘give’ which reduces the risk of pressure build up. Birch rates it at a 6/10 on the firmness scale, and when we tested it, we thought this was about right. It’s a medium firm feel, meaning most sleeping positions will be supported, although we think back and stomach sleepers will find it most comfortable. Although it’s worth noting that our light weight side sleeper was pleasantly surprised by the comfort of this mattress, so it’s an option that’ll suit just about anyone. It’s also ideal for people who move around a lot in their sleep, because the surface will bounce back to position as you move, and then contour to your new position quickly.
Because of this, we didn’t award the mattress full marks for motion isolation. It still performed well, getting a 3.5/5, but memory foam will always absorb motion better than latex. But where this bed really excels in its temperature regulation, hence why it makes it into this year’s best cooling mattress guide. The combination of the open structure of latex and the hybrid construction means there is plenty of airflow through the mattress. Pair this with naturally cool and moisture wicking materials like cotton and wool, and you’ve got a mattress that’s ideal for hot sleepers. In fact, our lead tester awarded this bed 5/5 for temperature regulation.
While the sleep trial isn’t as generous as some others in this guide, at 100 nights, the lifetime warranty means that while it’s a big investment, it should last you a long time. You’ll also get free fast shipping, with an option to add a setup and removal service. Birch offers an evergreen discount sitewide, meaning the Birch Natural is always 20% off, however, this discount does often increase to 25% off during major sale events.

Best organic mattress for side sleepers

Reasons to avoid
Side sleepers need extra cushioning around the shoulders, hips and knees to avoid pressure building in these areas, leading to aches and pains. Often, natural latex can have a firmer feel than the traditional 'sinking' and 'hugging' feel of memory foam. However, this Naturepedic mattress combines wool batting with microcoils and latex to create a bed that contours to the body, making it one of the most comfortable mattresses for side sleepers.
The Naturepedic Concerto Pillow Top is a latex hybrid mattress, meaning there are seven layers of certified organic latex, organic cotton and wool batting, high-density microcoils, and encased coils. This, combined with the plush pillow top, creates a soft but responsive surface, ideal for side sleepers. However, because of the impressive support, the mattress will cater to a wide range of sleeping styles.
Our professional mattress testers were surprised by how soft this mattress felt, especially in comparison to other beds in the guide, like the Birch and the Nolah. However, both back sleepers and side sleepers found it to be comfortable, with the euro top offering excellent pressure relief and the 4000 high-density microcoils offering targeted support and spine alignment. This mattress also excels in temperature regulation, sleeping naturally cool because of the breathable natural fabrics used, like wool and cotton, alongside the dual coil layers that allow airflow throughout the structure. Despite the soft, sinking in feel, both edge support and motion isolation are good in this mattress, thanks to the responsive nature of the latex.
The mattress uses glueless encased coils that are individually wrapped for full body contouring. These add to the bouncy feel of the mattress, as well as aiding heat dissipation for easier temperature regulation. Like the best pillow top mattresses, the plush quilted cotton pillow top is made with wool batting and a PLA plant-based comfort layer which is naturally moisture wicking, keeping the mattress fresher for longer.
Naturepedic is a 1% for the Planet member, which means they put sustainability and the environment first. With your purchase you’ll get a 100-night trial, which is on the shorter side of sleep trials, but it does come with a generous 25-year warranty. Discounts range throughout the year, with Naturepedic regularly offering around 20% off on certain mattress models during major holidays and sale events. Currently there is a sitewide Fall sale offering 20% off, bringing the price of the Concerto Pillow Top down but still keeping it within the premium range of most mattresses.
Organic mattresses we've also tested
We're always testing new organic mattresses but not all of them make it into our top five organic beds of the year above. Below are some we've tested that are also worth considering:
Essentia Stratami mattress: ★★★★½
The Essentia Stratami is an all-latex mattress that comes in 8” and 10” heights with a medium-firm feel. For improved breathability, the mattress utilizes organic domed latex to allow air to flow through the material. It’s springy, buoyant and best suited to back and stomach sleepers. Prices start from $3,206 at Essentia.

How we test organic mattresses
The Tom’s Guide mattress review process is editorially independent and not influenced by any third parties. Our expert mattress testers sleep on each mattress for at least three weeks — that's roughly how long it takes for your body to get used to a new mattress — and spend hours scientifically testing the performance of each product.
Mattress firmness is subjective, so each lead reviewer also forms a trusted and experienced testing panel made up of people with different sleep needs and body types. We have side sleepers, back sleepers and stomach sleepers, with lighter, average and heavier bodies, who rate each mattress using a specific set of performance criteria.
Together, these processes enable us to produce accurate, well-balanced and data-backed mattress reviews, to help you easily decide whether the mattress you’re interested in really is the best choice for you. Read our full mattress methodology for more.

Why trust Tom’s Guide reviews
At Tom’s Guide we are completely editorially independent. This means that we choose what mattresses to review, what guides they appear in and where they rank within those guides.
This is determined by our mattress methodology, followed by our team of expert mattress testers. This is a guide we use to assess a mattress’s performance, which is standardized across all of our reviews and includes tests for edge support, motion isolation and pressure relief.
We live and breathe mattresses. Lauren Jeffries, our Sleep Features Editor, reports on everything in the organic mattress industry, from new mattress releases and detailed guides about mattress certifications, to news stories uncovering the damaging effects of VOCs in non-organic beds. This means we know our mattresses inside and out, and how they compare to competitors.
We’re constantly updating our guides. Behind the scenes, the Tom’s Guide Sleep Team are busy ordering in new mattresses, testing them in our studio and taking them home to sleep on in order to get a full picture of how they perform. This means we’re always updating our guides with new information, new top picks and any important news and updates that will help our readers choose the perfect mattress for them.
Organic mattress FAQs
When is the best time to buy an organic mattress?
While all natural beds are pricey, most are usually discounted throughout the year thanks to holiday sale events. The biggest sales of the year are usually the Black Friday mattress deals in late November and the Cyber Monday mattress deals in early December.
Other shopping events where we expect big discounts include the Presidents' Day mattress sales in February and the Memorial Day mattress sales towards the end of May, and this is a good chance to save on an organic mattress before the prices are generally increased over the summer period.
All of that said, we have noticed a continuing trend among the best organic mattress brands to offer similar price cuts each month, as a way to make these normally more expensive beds a little more accessible to buy. Brands such as Plush Beds, Saatva and Awara offer evergreen discounts, and these normally comprise money off and free bedding.
What's better, Talalay or Dunlop latex?
Our Talalay vs Dunlop latex explainer goes through it in more detail, but here's the short version. Both types are made from the same raw material, but manufactured in slightly different ways. Talalay latex is typically softer, less dense and more expensive. It's better for comfort layers. Dunlop latex is typically firmer, denser, and cheaper. It's ideal for support layers, but is also sometimes found in comfort layers. Because of the way it's produced, Talalay latex cannot be GOLS certified organic.
How to choose the best organic mattress
Before investing in a new organic mattress, carefully consider your current sleeping habits. Think about what you enjoy about your current mattress and what you would like to see improved. For example, waking in the night because you’ve overheated could be rectified with a mattress with cooling properties, like the Amerisleep Organica mattress. Or perhaps you’ve recently started waking up with back pain, in which case you might benefit from a mattress that specifically delivers targeted spinal support, such as the Nolah Natural 11 mattress. Whatever your sleep needs, make sure you opt for a mattress that meets them.
Of course, you can’t really know how comfortable a mattress is until you start sleeping on it. Choosing a mattress with a long trial period, such as the Saatva Zenhaven Natural Latex, which comes with a 365 night trial, will allow you to purchase your mattress with peace of mind.
How much does a good organic mattress cost?
Organic mattresses command a slightly higher price tag, and the most affordable options in our list start from around $1,100 for a queen size. However, a queen size Awara Natural Hybrid mattress, America’s most affordable organic mattress, is currently on sale for $999, which is the cheapest we’ve ever seen it. On the other end of the spectrum, a queen size Saatva Zenhaven Latex — which is crafted by New Zealand wool, natural latex and organic cotton — is currently on sale for $2,945. so prices really vary. Just like the best non-organic mattresses, prices vary in line with different features and specifications.
Are organic mattresses fiberglass free?
Yes, organic mattresses don't contain fiberglass, which is generally considered as a toxic substance. Fiberglass is made from glass and plastic and is used as a fire retardant in mattresses. When used in mattresses, it is encased within the mattress cover, which means it's not dangerous for sleepers. However, if fiberglass escapes the mattress it can pose severe risks for your health.
Organic mattresses opt for natural alternatives to fiberglass, like wool and thistle pulp. This reduces the risk of toxic substances escaping and ensures the whole mattress is organic and eco-friendly.
Should you buy a sustainable mattress?
Let's put aside the environmental benefits for a moment – can your sleep benefit from buying a sustainable mattress? Mattress brands that opt for sustainable builds might not have the full range of materials to choose from, but these beds aren't simplistic or uncomfortable. Sustainable mattresses can still be made using the latest technology and with a comfort level that mimics even the best memory foam mattresses.
Before choosing a sustainable mattress, consider your sleep style. From my experience – both using on an eco-friendly bed and working as a sleep writer – sustainable mattresses tend to have a firmer feel that suits back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers might struggle to find a softer sustainable bed, but the market is growing, and firmness is subjective. Otherwise, investing in a mattress topper can help soften a firm organic bed – our guide to the best mattress toppers can help you get started.
To return to those environmental benefits, if you do prioritize sustainability, you shouldn't have to compromise when it comes to your sleep. A green bed doesn't have to mean someone has forgotten to clean their mattress – it could be just what your rest needs.
