Bear Elite Hybrid vs Cocoon by Sealy Chill: Materials & Design

  • Both are hybrid mattresses with springs and foams
  • Bear Elite is 14" tall with four internal layers
  • Cocoon by Sealy Chill is 12" with four internal layers

The Cocoon by Sealy Chill comes in both an all-foam and hybrid version. The all-foam version ranks highly in our best memory foam mattress guide. However, as hybrids tend to sleep cooler than their all-foam counterparts, that is what we are focusing on within this comparison piece.

As hybrid mattresses, both the Bear Elite and Cocoon by Sealy Chill Hybrid combine individually-wrapped coils with memory foam to offer an ideal balance of comfort and support. Both also have a cooling cover to enhance temperature regulation. While there are similarities between the two mattresses, let's look at what sets them apart.

The 14" Bear Elite Hybrid earns a spot as one of our best hybrid mattresses this year, thanks to its build quality and cooling prowess. Made up of five layers plus a quilted cover as standard and optional Celliant cooling layer upgrade, it offers sturdy support and cradling comfort for a range of sleepers.

Sitting just beneath the cover is a layer of copper-infused memory foam, followed by a layer of supportive transition foam. Next comes the coils, each individually wrapped with extra-reinforced coils around the edges. Finally a high-density foam adds support to the entire mattress.

The Cocoon by Sealy Chill Hybrid is a four layer mattress but, at 12" tall, it is 2" shorter than the Bear. However, it is the brand's most advanced mattress designed with Cocoon by Sealy's signature Quantum Edge Technology for reinforced edge support, responsive fabric-encased coils for targeted support, reduced motion transfer and better airflow. The mattress' cover is infused with phase change material for enhanced temperature regulation.

Bear Elite Hybrid vs Cocoon by Sealy Chill: Comfort & Support

  • Bear Elite Hybrid is available in three firmness levels (soft, medium, firm)
  • The Cocoon by Sealy Chill Hybrid Mattress is medium-firm
  • Both mattresses offer adequate support for those with back pain

The Bear Elite Hybrid comes in three different firmness levels to suit different sleep positions and body weights. For our Bear Elite Hybrid mattress review, we tested the bed in a medium feel and our testing panel found it to be on the softer side of medium.

The quilted cover and upper foam layers are designed to be cushioning without too much sinkage. Instead we found the foam cradles pressure points without compromising lumbar support or curtailing movement. The individually encased coils provide deep pressure relief and excellent zoned support, which is great news for anyone with lower back pain.

We recommend the medium feel for back sleepers and heavier side sleepers. Average weight side sleepers should consider the soft, while stomach sleepers should opt for the firm.

On the other hand, the Cocoon by Sealy Chill comes just medium-firm. As one of our best mattresses for side sleepers and best mattresses for back pain, the Chill Mattress earns big kudos for the level of support and comfort it offers at such a budget price.

The Cocoon By Sealy Chill delivers a classic memory foam feel in that it is supportive and contours to your body to cushion pressure in the hips and shoulders (hence why it is a top pick for side sleepers). The robust, responsive support offered by the coil layer means the mattress is also a good choice for heavier sleepers who love memory foam but don’t like to feel stuck.

Bear Elite Hybrid vs Cocoon by Sealy Chill: Temperature regulation

  • Both mattresses have cooling covers with Phase Change Materials
  • You can upgrade the Bear with a Celliant Infused cover
  • The Cocoon By Sealy Chill uses phase-changing material to dissipate heat

As two top-rated cooling mattresses, both mattresses are designed with advanced cooling features and are superb choices for year-round hot sleepers.

As standard, the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress comes with a quilted cover featuring Phase Change Material designed to draw heat away from the body, but for very hot sleepers, you can upgrade to a Celliant-infused cover. This high-tech addition features Sleep Recovery Technology, to regulate temperature and promote overall wellbeing.

Celliant is a synthetic fiber that converts body heat into infrared energy, which is then reflected back into the body. This helps improve thermoregulation while you sleep, aiding a more restful sleep and promoting faster muscle recovery, making it a great bed for people with dedicated fitness regimes. It also wicks away moisture and dries fabrics quickly, which equals a more comfortable sleep for hot sleepers.

The Cocoon By Sealy Chill cooling technology mostly comes from it's advanced cooling cover. This cover uses phase-changing material to absorb and dissipate any excess heat. This means that while it doesn't feel cool to the touch, once you're sleeping on it, it'll wick away heat. The comfort layer also works to help keep the mattress cool too as this breathable foam allows for additional airflow and ensures the heat doesn’t get stuck within the mattress.
